What the research says
Steady sound works mainly by masking: it makes sudden noises stand out less. Beyond that, the evidence is smaller than the hype, and we’d rather you knew it.
- Very lowThe quality of evidence that continuous noise improves sleep, in a 2021 systematic review 1.
- −19 minREM sleep per night with pink noise at 50 dB in a 2026 sleep-lab study of 25 adults; earplugs beat noise against traffic sound 2.
- g ≈ 0.25A small boost on attention tasks from white or pink noise for young people with ADHD; a small drop for others (13 studies) 3.
- 14 of 14Infant sound machines louder than the 50 dB nursery limit at full volume, 30 cm away; three passed 85 dB 4.
- 70 dBA moderate café-level hum helped creative thinking more than 50 or 85 dB 5.
- 85 dBANIOSH’s 8-hour workplace limit. Background sound should be far quieter 6.
So: use sound when there’s noise to cover, keep it quiet, use the timer, and see our sleep and focus guides for settings.

How it works
Step by step: mix your own sound
- Press play. Every page opens with its sound ready. Press the green button and it starts at once: nothing to download, no sign-up.
- Tap sounds to add them. Tap any sound to add it to the mix: rain, the ocean, a fan, a fireplace. Tap it again to take it out. Open All sounds for all 22.
- Slide to set each level. Each sound has its own slider. A steady bed, like brown noise or rain, with one or two quieter details on top, makes the best mix.
- Share your mix. Share mix copies a link with your exact sounds and levels. Whoever opens it hears the same thing, with no account.
Questions
Is MoodNoise free?
Yes. Every sound, the mixer, presets, a sleep timer up to an hour and share links are free, with no account, no ads and no sign-up. MoodNoise Pro ($5 for 30 days or $29 a year, never auto-renews) adds timers of any length with fade schedules, a wake-up alarm, saved mixes, playback with your phone locked and downloads.
Do the sounds loop?
No. Every sound is generated live in your browser, so there’s no recording to repeat and no loop point to hear. It also means pages load fast and work offline.
Which sound is best for sleep?
Most people sleep best with something steady and soft: brown noise, pink noise, rain or a fan. Try one a night for a few nights. Our sleep guide has settings that work.
Which sound is best for focus?
Something without words or rhythm: brown noise, pink noise, rain, a library or a quiet café. The deep focus preset is our most-used mix for work.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes, in any modern browser. Phones pause web audio when the screen locks; keep the screen on, or use Pro’s locked-screen mode to keep it playing.
Is anything uploaded or tracked?
No. Sounds are made on your device, your mixes stay in your browser, and there are no ads, analytics or trackers.
